Baby it’s cold outside!

6 Feb

The temperatures have plummeted rececently and sometimes it is difficult to look stylish yet keep warm at the same time. Your go to option should be faux fur – very on trend right now and perfect for keeping you nice and toasty!

Faux fur for the ultimate in every day glamour

Just one plush garment can shield you from the elements and make you look luxuriously snug (and smug) – faux fur.

From teddy bear coats to subtle fluffy trims, there’s a Winter wonder to suit everyone’s furry fashion limit. Why not be faux fur fabulous with all this cold weather around?

Full pelt

A thick, faux fur coat has Winter written all over it. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s a sound overcoat investment for the big freeze months, from November through to March.

Colour is all-important when selecting your faux fur. If you have a Warm skin tone go for the browns, fawns and camels, should you have a Cool skin tone choose grey or black fur.

There are also lots of animal print furs which are the ultimate statement if you have a Dramatic or Creative style personality. Leopard used to be the go-to print, but now you’ll find Friesian cow or Dalmatian spots, if you prefer a quirky monochrome colour way.

Furry trims

Faux fur can be used as a glamorous accent on clothes, almost like tinsel on a Christmas tree, but minus sparkle.

You can pretty much forgo a scarf if you opt for a winter coat with a generous faux fur or shearling collar. The bigger the collar, the bigger the style statement.

Avoid a furry collar if you’re bigger busted, as it’s likely to exaggerate your proportions but, conversely, if you’re lacking in that area, it can boost your assets.

Generous faux fur trims on hemlines are the latest way to draw attention to your legs. Ensure you keep your pins streamlined in skinny jeans, leggings or tights, so that the fur can frame your limbs to the max.

This Dr. Zivago look never disappoints on the glam stakes.

Fluffy extras

Embrace the fluff factor with Siberia-inspired extras. Keep the cold out with furry snoods and scarves draped over shoulders, big hats – Cossack style – cuddling heads, and mittens over paws – all easy ways to add fur accents to your look.

If you want a colour contrast, the high street has rainbow bright numbers for a fun approach. Many of the above are available in the shops now at extraordinary discounts.

Throw practicality out of the window with this season’s surprise fuzzy evening extras: think sandals trimmed with fluffy marabou and clutch bags decked out in cosy shearling. They won’t keep you warm but they will look furry fabulous.

It just so happens that I have some fab bargains for you too! I have lots of faux fur items and vintage inspired gloves listed on Ebay right now! I have a Buy it Now price but you can make me an offer – I need to get rid of all my Winter stock so do take a look. Click on the picture below to have a browse.

Wear Pink with confidence this October

17 Oct

Pink is the new black! Autumn/Winter is borrowing a colour usually reserved for Spring this year – pink! For Winter, there are two variations – dusty rose or berry – so embrace it and think pink this season. If you invested in a dusky pink coat last Autumn/Winter, you can breathe a sigh of relief!

So how should we be wearing pink this Autumn/Winter? Well, firstly, you can transition some of your light Spring/Summer pink items by wearing them with heavier layers, thick tights and chunky boots.

Keep your look fresh by choosing monochrome – brighter pinks look best with black and lighter pinks look amazing with light greys and charcoals. More corally, peachy pinks look super chic teamed with taupes and pewter.

However, pink is not an easy colour to wear and you must get the right hue for your personal colouring.

Here is my guide to choosing the correct pink.

If you have light blonde hair and light eyes like Gwyneth Paltrow choose a baby pink or dusty rose pink and mix it with greys and blues for a flattering look.

Gorgeous baby pink wrap coat by Ted Baker at John Lewis £299

If you have dark hair and dark eyes, think Catherine Zeta Jones, you should choose a strong, rich pink. If solid pink is not for you, choose a print instead, incorporating a hint of pink.

For those of you with Auburn hair, your best pinks will be corals and salmon pinks. Wear these with grey, but also with golden browns and moss greens for great effect.

If your hair is salt & pepper, silver or white (natural or not) the hot, rose and fuchsia pinks are must-haves in your wardrobe. This season wear them with your greys but also with those lovely navy blues we are seeing around. Pink will give you that boost of energy that you deserve.

If like the Duchess of Cambridge you have dark hair and bright eyes, you should wear the brightest shades of pink available, and you can wear them to contrast with other colours. Think cyclamen, rose or blush worn on their own, or again with greys, navies and black.

If your overall look is soft and muted, make your pink soft and muted too. The best shades of pink for you are salmon and powder pinks. Just make sure they blend nicely with what you are wearing

Whatever pink you wear make sure that your lipstick matches the hue and intensity for an elegant look. Remember, pink says gentleness, empathy and brings some femininity to every woman.

In case you didn’t know, there is an extra reason to wear pink as this October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

If you want to go the extra mile and support Breast Cancer Awareness month, I am delighted to announce that a group of Colour Me Beautiful consultants have been brave enough to pose virtually naked in just a drape of material and some fab shoes to produce a charity calendar with all proceeds going to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Lorraine Kelly has very kindly agreed to endorse the calendar.

“I’m delighted to support this project in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and promoting a positive body image. I hope you love the calendar as much as I do and that you too will be inspired to be breast aware.”

The calendar can be purchased for £10.56 from www.2015calendar.co.uk

Scarlet Fever

16 Aug

Helloooo!

It has been such a long time since I blogged – I have been really, really busy – have you missed me? I hope everyone is having a great Summer and looking forward to the exciting new fashions that are starting to appear in the shops right now.

Autumn is my favourite time of year and I can’t contain my giddiness that THE hot colour for Autumn/Winter 2014 is RED!!!

susan-styles-you-women-trends-review-fall-winter-2014-2015-from-milan-london-paris-new-york-fashion-weeks-red

The catwalks were awash with healthy, warm and vibrant head to toe scarlets in all hues this season. Red is the ultimate power colour that screams “LOOK AT ME!”. If you want to be noticed and remembered – wear red, but not just any red – your red!

Red is a difficult colour to get right as there are so many different shades of it. I know from personal experience. You see, I never wore red until I disovered Colour Analysis and found MY red. My mother never dressed me in red as a child, I never chose red when I was old enough to shop for myself. I simply believed that wearing red would clash with my hair. But now I have discovered the right reds for my individual colouring, I love to wear it and I am always complimented when I wear it. The red family has so many variations, from raspberry to tomato so getting the undertone right is crucial.

Red is the colour of energy, wear red and you will feel confident and in control. It will bring excitement to your day. It is a great colour to wear at the end of the week when your energy levels may be flagging. So, probably not a great colour to wear if you are trying to get the kids off to sleep 🙂

There are two reds in Pantone’s Fall 2014 collection. Firstly, Sangria, “an exotic red that evokes a sense of glamorous adventures and faraway destinations”.

susan-styles-you-sangria

Secondly, there is Aurora Red “a more sophisticated shade that adds verve and spark”. Nice of them to give us a choice 🙂

susan-styles-you-Yoana-Baraschi-sketch-Fall2014

When wearing red, take care with your lipstick and make sure it is in the same tone. Colour Me Beautiful cosmetics are specifically designed to suit individual colouring, so it makes your choice easy peasy! You can purchase Colour Me Beautiful cosmetics from my online shop Susan Styles You. If you are not sure what suits you, just give me a call and I can help you choose!

For those with warm undertones, choose an earthy red like Tomato.

For those with a cool undertone, Ruby is lovely.

Keep an eye out for my next blog, where I will be sharing my top RED HOT picks on the High Street!

Do you know what red suits you? No? Well, come and find out!

A Full Colour Analysis with me costs just £120, which includes a full makeover using Colour Me Beautiful cosmetics and your own 42 colour palette to take away with you. Believe me, it will transform you and the the way you shop!

KEEPING ABREAST OF THINGS …

30 Jun

susan-styles-you-bras-tape

So, when was the last time you got measured for a bra? Well if it isn’t in the last year listen up!

There are many reasons why you should have your boobs professionally measured – these are just some of them:

* weight gain
* weight loss
* pregnancy
* menopause
* illness
* puberty
* lactation

It is also very important to replace your bras regularly as constant washing means less support over time.

More than a third of women wear the wrong bra size. Most women are wearing a bra that is too big in the back size and too small in the cup size. Wearing the right size bra can make you look and feel fabulous. Wearing the wrong size will make you look heavier and your boobs will look saggy. You may even suffer from back ache and muscle tension. The right size bra will completely change the shape of your body, keeping your breasts exactly where they are meant to be. It will cause your torso to look leaner and slimmer – it can make you look a whopping 10lb slimmer! And, you have to admit it, wearing a sexy new bra and pants does wonders for your confidence! It is your little secret 🙂

You should have a wardrobe of bras that suit your lifestyle. You may need one with seams, one without, a push up bra, a t shirt bra, a sports bra, a strapless bra. Then you ideally need three of each style, one to wear, one to wash and one in the drawer.

During a Style Consultation, I always ask “When were you last measured for a bra?”. I am pleased to say that most ladies do make sure they do this regularly, but recently, I thought to myself “When was the last time I was measured for a bra?” and I am ashamed to say it is quite a few years. So, last week I took myself off to Bravissimo in Manchester City Centre. They have a unique way of deciding what bra size you should be – they do it purely by sight!

I am pleased to inform you that I WAS wearing the correct size bra (Phew!) – 30F if you are interested. And I decided to treat myself to a couple of new sets. My instructions were – no black, white or nude – I fancied some colours and something pretty. You should take your individual colouring into account when selecting lingerie too! And PLEASE do not wear white lingerie under white clothes! Choose a bra that closely resembles your skin tone to avoid awkward over exposure.

Following my brief (see what I did there?) the Bravissimo sales assistant came to my fitting room with an array of bras in different colours and styles for me to try on and was very helpful in helping make my choice. She even made notes of the styles I liked for future purchases.

Here is what I decided on – the Marcie in yellow and the Satine in Bloom:

Bravissimo has a great video on their website to give you some guidelines on the perfect fitting bra:

Whilst we are on the subject of boobs, I wanted to share with you something fantastic. Some of my amazing Colour Me Beautiful colleagues have taken their clothes off in support of Breakthrough Breast Cancer! They are aiming to produce and sell 5,000 copies of their fabulous glossy A3 calendar, which features 13 real women, inspiring quotes and professional style advice. Their cover girl, Maria, was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago and had her final chemotherapy treatment the day after the photo shoot, although you wouldn’t know it, she looks amazing! Her early diagnosis and positivity have been a key factor as she’s responding very well to treatment and we want to make sure that all women have the same opportunity by raising awareness of the Touch Look Check campaign.

BC-Calendar

They have already smashed their target of £7000 to cover printing costs and any further donations will be going straight to Breakthrough Breast Cancer – please check out Body Confidence Calendar 2015 and give them your support!

Here is a bit of fun to finish with:

Soft Florals

15 Apr
Soft Florals

Do you have dark blonde hair and eyes that are soft and muted like Kylie? This is for you.

Because your look is blended, your colours need to be worn “tone on tone” with little contrast.

This relaxed and lightweight soft floral dress is perfect for your colouring. Florals continue to be a popular choice for this Spring and this one is currently on sale, reduced from from £235 to £120 at Kate Spade. Layer it up with an unstructured suede jacket in a neutral colour like this one from Mango. I have added these sweet little floral earrings from Dorothy Perkins – a bargain at just £6.50. Continue the romantic theme with this gorgeous jumbled hearts bangle from cwonder.com. You can’t go wrong with a Michael Kors watch and I just love the twist on this one with a green face.

With brighter days ahead, ditch the boring black handbag and go for a colour. This Radley tote is clean and sophisticated – a look that will take you effortlessly from office to dinner. It is currently on sale at John Lewis from £229 to £183.

Complete your chic Spring look with these contemporary wide-strap sandals from Debenhams. The heels are just high enough to be stylish but comfortable too. Block heels are a big trend too!

Confused by colour? You need to be colourised!

Spring Summer 2014 trends with Manchester Arndale #tweetseataccess

10 Apr

arndale

I was recently lucky enough to be invited by Leanne, Debs and Helen to look at Spring Summer 2014 fashion trends at the shopping mecca that is Manchester Arndale as part of #tweetseataccess

Here’s moi in the Tweetseat under starters orders!

tweet

First stop Dorothy Perkins. The shop was awash with lots of pretty pastels in shades of mint, peach, coral and pink. Think fondant fancies and all things sweet. Becky showed us some of their style essentials and how to work a maxi from day to night using accessories in pastel shades.

dp

We all loved this cute coral vintage inspired dress. The detail on this dress is amazing for the price (currently on sale at just £34.20) and it is a very figure flattering cut. By working this girly trend you can satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling guilty!

07213760_2_thumb

We also had a sneaky peek of their Summer collection which has just started to arrive in the shops. The jungle inspired collection is right up my street and I spotted a couple of maxi dresses in lovely vibrant colours which will be perfect for my upcoming holiday to Thailand.

Something I didn’t know was that Dorothy Perkins now house some exciting collections such as Billie and Blossom – full of feminine dresses in an array of colours perfect for Spring.

Next it was on to Monsoon to look at 3D florals. We were taken to the beautiful Personal Shopping Suite which was like walking into a secret garden filled with every type of floral accessories possible. From soft, pastel prints to vibrant hues, there really is something to suit everyone’s colouring. I also loved some of the darker, edgier prints.

monsoon

Lauren showed us her pick of the trends, including the cute little crochet insert denim shorts, floral ruck sacks and the most amazing floral headbands I have ever seen! She showed us how to combine two florals together and, to truly bloom, add oversized floral jewellery. Simples!

monsoon denim shorts

If you have a festival coming up you need to get yourself down to Monsoon sharpish!

Kurt Geiger was next on the list to look at the Paintbox trend with the lovely Mark. Did someone say shoes? OMG you have to go and see the Spring collection – I was seriously in Shoe Heaven!. From pillar box red to cobalt blue, this bright and bold trend is not for the faint hearted. We were all like kiddies in a sweet shop as we “oohed’ and “aahed” at the displays. Mark reliably informed us that THE key look of the season is black paired with orange accessories. You heard it here first folks!

Just look at these beauties!

kurt

ADDED BONUS = I have been searching for a pair of stylish and comfortable wedges for my upcoming holiday and BINGO there they were. Netural, lightweight t bar “Known” sandals that will go with everything – also available in gold! One less thing to think about.

known

Finally, we landed at Boots to look at the latest trends in make-up and hair – Bold Statements. First make-up and Jay at No 7 gave me the works! Gorgeous goldy greeny eyes and a fab bright pinky reddy lip that was just perfect for my colouring. Andrew from Bumble and Bumble “jushed” (is that a technical term?) up my hair using a fab product called City Swept which creates a lived in “street-styled” look with separation and sheen. I loved the product so much I HAD to buy it. I left feeling very glamorous!

So a big thank you Manchester Arndale for a lovely afternoon!

I would love to hear what your favourite spring trends are – over to you …

Spring Style for Cool Cats

2 Apr
Spring Style for Cool Cats

Do you have ash or platinum tones in your hair, or are you like Kelly Osbourne, one of many young women who tint their hair ash, grey or pink tones? This is for you!

Because your look is cool and pinkish, all your colours need to have a cool or blue undertone, preferably with some contrast. You will always look best in in medium to deep colours. If you wear brown, balance it with cool shades from your palette like rose pink.

Avoid colours that have a warm tone as these will make your skin appear sallow. If you do wear yellow, make it a print. Keep your make-up cool and beware brown based lipsticks. Colour Me Beautiful new Glam lipstick is a gorgeous blue based red – perfect for your colouring.

I have based my outfit around this exceedingly wearable jersey skirt from hot label FAIR+true. With slouchy pockets and elasticated waistband it is really wearable and a great year round addition to your wardrobe. I do love pockets. You could dress it up with heels , a statement clutch bag and a silk cami for work for evening. This is a great shape for creating volume on the bottom half for Inverted Triangles. The skirt is available from seriously stylish but seriously ethical http://www.fashion-conscious.com.

Slogan tshirts are big news this Spring/Summer so I have clashed it up with this quirky tie dye version from Henry Holland at www.choicestore.co.uk. I layered it with a sleeveless coat – one of this season’s key pieces – on white. This one is from Sportmax at House of Fraser. I have added a fringed, cobalt blue shoulder bag from www.yoox.com and some metallic flats from Miss KG at www.asos.com. Throw on some silver jewels and you are good to go!
