Baby it’s cold outside!

6 Feb

The temperatures have plummeted rececently and sometimes it is difficult to look stylish yet keep warm at the same time. Your go to option should be faux fur – very on trend right now and perfect for keeping you nice and toasty!

Faux fur for the ultimate in every day glamour

Just one plush garment can shield you from the elements and make you look luxuriously snug (and smug) – faux fur.

From teddy bear coats to subtle fluffy trims, there’s a Winter wonder to suit everyone’s furry fashion limit. Why not be faux fur fabulous with all this cold weather around?

Full pelt

A thick, faux fur coat has Winter written all over it. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s a sound overcoat investment for the big freeze months, from November through to March.

Colour is all-important when selecting your faux fur. If you have a Warm skin tone go for the browns, fawns and camels, should you have a Cool skin tone choose grey or black fur.

There are also lots of animal print furs which are the ultimate statement if you have a Dramatic or Creative style personality. Leopard used to be the go-to print, but now you’ll find Friesian cow or Dalmatian spots, if you prefer a quirky monochrome colour way.

Furry trims

Faux fur can be used as a glamorous accent on clothes, almost like tinsel on a Christmas tree, but minus sparkle.

You can pretty much forgo a scarf if you opt for a winter coat with a generous faux fur or shearling collar. The bigger the collar, the bigger the style statement.

Avoid a furry collar if you’re bigger busted, as it’s likely to exaggerate your proportions but, conversely, if you’re lacking in that area, it can boost your assets.

Generous faux fur trims on hemlines are the latest way to draw attention to your legs. Ensure you keep your pins streamlined in skinny jeans, leggings or tights, so that the fur can frame your limbs to the max.

This Dr. Zivago look never disappoints on the glam stakes.

Fluffy extras

Embrace the fluff factor with Siberia-inspired extras. Keep the cold out with furry snoods and scarves draped over shoulders, big hats – Cossack style – cuddling heads, and mittens over paws – all easy ways to add fur accents to your look.

If you want a colour contrast, the high street has rainbow bright numbers for a fun approach. Many of the above are available in the shops now at extraordinary discounts.

Throw practicality out of the window with this season’s surprise fuzzy evening extras: think sandals trimmed with fluffy marabou and clutch bags decked out in cosy shearling. They won’t keep you warm but they will look furry fabulous.

It just so happens that I have some fab bargains for you too! I have lots of faux fur items and vintage inspired gloves listed on Ebay right now! I have a Buy it Now price but you can make me an offer – I need to get rid of all my Winter stock so do take a look. Click on the picture below to have a browse.

Tiaras at the ready -it’s Prom time! #tweetseatprom

12 May

susan-styles-you-Limo_Prom_Night

So it is that time of year when teenage girls get excited about choosing their Prom outfits and dads are filled with dread just thinking about that dent in their bank balance. Prom season has now become HUGE in the UK. There was never anything like it when I was a teenager. Yes, we had school discos but they didn’t require us to dress in sparkly dresses. I was even underwhelmed by my First Holy Communion dress as my Mum refused point blank to let me wear a “sticky out” dress. Mine was a simple cotton straight tunic dress with daisy applique. Looking back at it, it was really cute but I wanted a “sticky out” one :-(.

I was recently invited to Manchester Arndale to go and take a look at some of the styles of dresses currently available at their stores. I was really interested to discover that the typical Mancunian mother starts discussing outfits with her daughter FIVE months before the event. PLUS the average spend now for a prom outfit, including beauty treatments and cars is £428!!! Wowsers! Basically, mums are prepared to go ALL OUT to ensure their daughter draws envious looks from other Prom goers. Nearly 40 per cent said they would consider a Personal Stylist to ensure their daughter looks the business. I actually did a Colour and Style Consultation for a 16 year old in January which included advice on her Prom dress.

Popular styles in Manchester right now vary from full length fitted dresses in pastel shades to shorter styles that can be worn again. Personal Stylist at Manchester Arndale, Debs Hatfield is available for free advice on Prom dresses. When I asked her what her top tips were for Prom dressing she said this “Pare down the jewellery if you have a detailed dress and don’t go OTT on the tan” Wise words indeed.

So, on to the clothes. Our first stop was Pastiche. This shop is jam packed full of sequins, frills and glitter! A real princess paradise! Some of their dresses are quite expensive, but they offer a payment plan to help with this if required. Pastiche go that extra mile when it comes to Prom dresses as they carefully keep a record of everyone’s details and will only sell one style of dress per school. We saw a few of the dresses being modelled and this was my favourite – you really will make an entrance in red!

Pastiche really does have something to suit all tastes from real show stoppers to elegant and chic. Sleek styles are very popular this season as opposed to the more traditional princess styles. Backless is a also a popular trend and Mancunian girls are loving purple this year. Purple is a great choice for your Prom dress as it is a “universal” colour that suits most skin tones.

Next stop was Coast – where we were greeted by some beautiful bright dresses!

susan-styles-you-tweetseatprom-oasis

Coast really is a go to store for special occasion outfits. You know that you can walk into Coast and come out with the whole outfit – dress, shoes, bag, stole, jewellery – the whole shebang! Their best selling dress this season is the Michegan – available in a full length version and also a shorter one. This has also been very popular for bridesmaids. Did you know that some Coast dresses have a pocket in the shoulder straps in which you can hook your bra to keep it concealed? Nifty eh?

susan-styles-you-coast-michegan

I love the pretty lilac colour of this gorgeous, luxurious floor-sweeping gown – guaranteed to put you in the limelight. The Michigan maxi dress has a stunning sweetheart neckline and boning in the bodice for a sleek and soft look. The dress features lustrous gathered satin detail at the waist which beautifully flatters your curves. The waterfall drape detail on the skirt adds just the right amount of romance to this head turning gown.

At Coast you can book a Style Lounge appointment and spend as long as you want trying on dresses with expert help and refreshments on hand.

The final stop for clothes was Lipsy. Lipsy is a young, funky and fresh brand just perfect for Prom dressing. From short and sassy cocktail styles to long red carpet worthy dresses and sultry midi length looks. A Lipsy dress makes it a stylish Prom night to remember. Their Prom range is very affordable – dads love Lipsy! Ah, but then that leaves money left over to spend on a fabulous pair of shoes …

susan-styles-you-tweeseatprom-lipsy

Talking of shoes, we finished our tour in Aldo. Whether you are looking for a simple nude pump (a popular choice right now) or you want to go for all out glamour in these super sparkly lovelies – Aldo is where it’s at.

Thanks to Leanne, Debs and Helen for an entertaining and informative afternoon!

Not sure what colour to go for? Why not book in a Colour Consultation with me and I can show you YOUR WOW colours!

Hello Beautiful!

8 May

What is your definition of beauty?

Yesterday I was invited to the launch of Selfridges #beautyproject in Exchange Square. This was the beginning of a 6 week long project of talks, debates and beauty related events.

I arrived on time and was given the most adorable limited edition Tatty Devine wristband to wear and keep.

susan-styles-you-tatty-devineThe place was fairly quiet at this time, so armed with a cute cocktail, I had a quick wander around and decided on a makeover at the Nars counter.

susan-styles-you-selfridges-cocktail
As I was being made up it started to get a lot busier with the most amazing hoola hoopers and a fab DJ set from Broken Hearts who looked awesome!

I absolutely loved my make-up, especially my eyes, using soft touch shadow pencil in Hollywood Land and eyeliner pencil in Kaliste. I loved the products so much I bought them! It was a great event and I loved my make-up so much I didn’t want to wash it off 🙂

Over the next few weeks you can have a private consultation with Armand Beasley for £75 (redeemable against any purchase) you can have a one to one with him over a glass of bubbly – how cool is that!

Plus over the next few weeks you can book onto a number of exclusive, inspiring and challenging talks looking at different aspects of what it means to be beautiful and the beauty industry. The talks take place at Selfridges Exchange Square and will include:

Thursday 8 May: Journalist Bim Adewunmi talks to actress Zawe Ashton (best know from Channel 4’s Fresh Meat) in ‘Carefree Black Girls’: Beauty Ideals, Cultural Aesthetics and Creativity – discussing the narrow standards of what constitutes ‘black (and mixed race) beauty’ in the media, the tentative return of TV’s ‘Carefree Black Girl’ and how beauty translates across different audiences.

Thursday 15 May: With 64-year-old Jessica Lange starring in the new Marc Jacobs Beauty campaign and 68-year-old Charlotte Rampling set to be the new face of Nars, is the time of women over 50 feeling ‘invisible’ to the beauty industry over? Fashion industry expert and diversity campaigner Caryn Franklin hosts a conversation with Helen Walmsey-Johnson (The Guardian’s Invisible Woman) and Jody Furlong (one of London’s top casting directors) about the relationship between beauty, brands and the older woman in Who are You Calling Invisible? Beauty and the Older Woman.

Wednesday 21 May: An exploration of the transformative powers of make-up and the role of beauty work in the creation and expression of gender and identity – with Dr Sally Hines (Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Leeds), Grace Oni Smith (make-up and drag artist) and Cheddar Gorgeous (drag performer, visual artist and Manchester academic) in We’re Born Naked, The Rest is Drag; Identity, Fantasy and Beauty Beyond Gender.

Wednesday 4 June: In The Good, The Bad and the Beautiful, journalist, broadcaster, Guardian columnist and founder of the award-winning salihughesbeauty.com, Sali Hughes will be in conversation with writer Emma Jane Unsworth and fashion historian Amber Butchart, discussing the rituals, history and effects of beauty work and examining its place in modern feminism.

All talks will take place in San Carlo’s Farmacia del Dolce (LG) and tickets are priced at £15 – which includes a glass of wine and tasting plate of San Carlo’s signature dishes. Tickets will be available from w/c 21 April and can be purchased online (www.selfridges.com) or in store

Get the lowdown on Jacques Vert #alldressedup

6 May

susan-styles-you-jacques-vert-1Last week I attended a fashion show for Jacques Vert in Debenhams, Manchester.

Although this is not a brand I would usually choose for myself, I was very interested to see what their collection was like for my Personal Shopping clients.

I was greeted with a glass of Prosecco and a cup cake, which is always a good start 🙂 and shown to my seat.

Jacques Vert is synonymous with elegant occasion wear and this collection did not disappoint. Everything was head to toe glamour and the collection is guaranteed to turn heads! Their versatile outfits are designed exclusively with exquisite style and are complemented with an array of hats, bags, shoes and a variety of other attractive accessories. This means that customers can shop for the ‘total outfit’. Jacques Vert staff are well equipped to help you choose your perfect outfit for any occasion. They also provide a Personal Shopping service for that extra special touch. It was refreshing to see that styles are available up to a size 24.

susan-styles-you-jacques-vert-2

I loved the bright and bold colour in this floral dress with matching bolero – a perfect fusion of classic and botanical. Crafted in a printed satin fabric, this standout piece is fully lined with a concealed centre-back zip. A back vent, flattering round neck and a style that sits just below the knee all contribute to one stylish silhouette. The silver metallic dress with luxury lace overlay is understated yet stylish. I adore the extremely flattering sheer half sleeves. It also features beautiful bead embellishment around the neckline and premium scalloped edging at the neckline and hem – just gorgeous!

susan-styles-you-jacques-vert-3

And how cheeky is this on trend colour block dress with a flash of fuchsia at the hem. If you have a great set of pins, this is the dress to show them off. I could see our lovely Kate in this dress!

susan-styles-you-jacques-vert-4

And finally, this cute polka dot dress with matching jacket is perfect for Mother of the Groom. This stunning dress is enhanced with fun and fabulous feminine features. With flattering mid sleeves, a scalloped neckline, black chiffon belt and a detachable floral corsage. Of course, you can’t go wrong with monochrome and this dress ticks all the boxes. White is always a fresh look and the black belt creates the illusion of a smaller waist.

The regular Jacques Vert customers were certainly chomping at the bit to get shopping after the fashion show! I will certainly be be bringing my Personal Shopping clients here when they need an occasion outfit. So, if you have a wedding to attend, or maybe a day at the races, or even tea with the Queen! Jacques Vert will become your go to shop with bright and smiling staff eager to assist you!

From “Rubbish” to Radiant!

21 Apr

Meet Sally:

sally b4

Sally contacted me recently with the following email:

“Hello my name is Sally. I need help I am so rubbish at styling myself and I live in Manchester City Centre and I feel self conscious walking around. I am fed up and want to dress nice. Look forward to hearing from you soon”

Sounds like a job for Susan Styles You!

I have used the words “rubbish” in the title as that is Sally’s word. Of course Sally isn’t rubbish – as you can see, she is young and pretty with a fab figure – but with no confidence to put together an outfit, incorporating accessories. Her safe bet – as it is with many people, was boring black.

We booked a Personal Shopping trip in the diary.

So fast forward a week and, after filling in a questionnaire and sending me a few pics, we meet in Manchester to rescue Sally.

I knew as soon as I met her that, with her lovely brown eyes and tanned skin, she would look great with bright and warm colours. This is an outfit we bought – TADA!

sally after

I accessorised the outfit with one of my necklaces – as Sally booked 4 hours of Personal Shopping with me, she qualified for £50 worth of FREE accessories!

So, what do you think? What a fabulous look for Sally! She looks positively radiant! Her skin is glowing – her teeth and eyes look brighter – and HURRAY she is smiling!

During our trip, we pulled together a collection of clothes and accessories that Sally could mix and match and wear from casual to evening with effortless ease. She was so pleased with her new look and here is what she had to say after the trip:

“I love my new look I went out last night for tea and felt a million dollars as they say hehe… I have learnt alot and ive started wearing green eyeliner instead of black and the difference is amazing. I cant thank you enough if I need anything il defo be in touch and il recommend you to any of my friends”

What can I say? Job done 🙂

Spring Summer 2014 trends with Manchester Arndale #tweetseataccess

10 Apr

arndale

I was recently lucky enough to be invited by Leanne, Debs and Helen to look at Spring Summer 2014 fashion trends at the shopping mecca that is Manchester Arndale as part of #tweetseataccess

Here’s moi in the Tweetseat under starters orders!

tweet

First stop Dorothy Perkins. The shop was awash with lots of pretty pastels in shades of mint, peach, coral and pink. Think fondant fancies and all things sweet. Becky showed us some of their style essentials and how to work a maxi from day to night using accessories in pastel shades.

dp

We all loved this cute coral vintage inspired dress. The detail on this dress is amazing for the price (currently on sale at just £34.20) and it is a very figure flattering cut. By working this girly trend you can satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling guilty!

07213760_2_thumb

We also had a sneaky peek of their Summer collection which has just started to arrive in the shops. The jungle inspired collection is right up my street and I spotted a couple of maxi dresses in lovely vibrant colours which will be perfect for my upcoming holiday to Thailand.

Something I didn’t know was that Dorothy Perkins now house some exciting collections such as Billie and Blossom – full of feminine dresses in an array of colours perfect for Spring.

Next it was on to Monsoon to look at 3D florals. We were taken to the beautiful Personal Shopping Suite which was like walking into a secret garden filled with every type of floral accessories possible. From soft, pastel prints to vibrant hues, there really is something to suit everyone’s colouring. I also loved some of the darker, edgier prints.

monsoon

Lauren showed us her pick of the trends, including the cute little crochet insert denim shorts, floral ruck sacks and the most amazing floral headbands I have ever seen! She showed us how to combine two florals together and, to truly bloom, add oversized floral jewellery. Simples!

monsoon denim shorts

If you have a festival coming up you need to get yourself down to Monsoon sharpish!

Kurt Geiger was next on the list to look at the Paintbox trend with the lovely Mark. Did someone say shoes? OMG you have to go and see the Spring collection – I was seriously in Shoe Heaven!. From pillar box red to cobalt blue, this bright and bold trend is not for the faint hearted. We were all like kiddies in a sweet shop as we “oohed’ and “aahed” at the displays. Mark reliably informed us that THE key look of the season is black paired with orange accessories. You heard it here first folks!

Just look at these beauties!

kurt

ADDED BONUS = I have been searching for a pair of stylish and comfortable wedges for my upcoming holiday and BINGO there they were. Netural, lightweight t bar “Known” sandals that will go with everything – also available in gold! One less thing to think about.

known

Finally, we landed at Boots to look at the latest trends in make-up and hair – Bold Statements. First make-up and Jay at No 7 gave me the works! Gorgeous goldy greeny eyes and a fab bright pinky reddy lip that was just perfect for my colouring. Andrew from Bumble and Bumble “jushed” (is that a technical term?) up my hair using a fab product called City Swept which creates a lived in “street-styled” look with separation and sheen. I loved the product so much I HAD to buy it. I left feeling very glamorous!

So a big thank you Manchester Arndale for a lovely afternoon!

I would love to hear what your favourite spring trends are – over to you …

Wearing black is slimming right?

16 Jan
Wearing black is slimming right?

WRONG!

Black can make you look slimmer but it depends on how you wear it, the weight of the fabric, the texture of the fabric and the cut of the clothing. If you are feeling a bit self conscious of your tummy area, you may be inclined to wear baggier and baggier clothes, thinking that you are disguising it. Unfortunately, this will have the opposite effect. I have news for you. Wearing shapeless clothes will make you look bigger!

Actually, ANY dark colour will make you look slimmer (black isn’t even a colour, in fact, its an absence of colour). Think about a room. If you paint it a dark colour, it appears smaller, if you paint it a light colour, the room appears larger. It is the same with clothes. Plus, as we mature, black can start to become a bit draining and we might need to wear a bit more make-up to lighten things up. So why choose boring black when there are so many other lovely colours to wear.

What about these for starters:

Teal (universally flattering) teal

Purple purple

Pewter pewter

Olive olive

Navy (tres chic) navy

Forest Green forest green

Chocolate Brown chocolate

Aubergine aubergine

As I mentioned previously, it is how you wear your dark colours that can make you look slimmer and wearing colour strategically is a great way to trick the eye. Look at the two outfits above. The outfit on the left is how most of us would wear black We have our safe black jacket and trousers and then we think, “let’s add a splash of colour with a bright top” (usually a baggy top too). Because there is contrast between the bright top and the dark trousers, it is cutting the body in half, making it appear shorter and wider. The jacket is also very boxy with no shape and is made of a stiff fabric which will not sit well over curves.

Now let’s look at the outfit on the right. The v neck of the dress opens up the decolletage. The dress is slightly shaped and the fabric has stretch in it which is very flattering for curves. The softness of the cardigan is much better for curves than a stiff, boxy jacket, plus it creates vertical lines down the body to lengthen it and make it appear slimmer. The scarf, worn long and straight means the eye is drawn up and down the body, again making it appear longer and leaner – it is all a clever illusion! Magic innit?

Confused by Colour? I can help!
