Susan’s Style Search

susanstylesyou emmaRecently I was delighted to be asked to be the Stylist for a photo shoot for Manchester Women’s Institute. This was a collaboration with Oxfam promoting the Get Together, in a national campaign as an important part of the 2013 International Women’s Day Celebrations.

The theme of the shoot was “Croquet in the City” and the brief was “glamorous, flamboyant and individual”. Think Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

All the ladies duly arrived at Oxfam’s Head Office on the morning of the shoot laden down with their outfits and the transformation began. The make-up ladies began to work their magic and one by one they reappeared looking glam and ready to get into their creations. I brought along a selection of furs, gloves, hats, fascinators, belts and of course my fabulous Stella & Dot jewellery! I added a little bit of fur here, some sparkle and baubles there and the look was complete. It was fantastic to see how each lady had a totally different look from 50s glam to pretty in pink to a vampy vintage catsuit.  I loved them all! There were some amazing fascinators and hats courtesy of the very talented Emma at Cheshire Hats. Emma’s vintage inspired creations are produced using traditional millinery techniques with the modern woman in mind.

However, my favourite was another Emma. She was channelling “Country” and her interpretation was a colour crazy ensemble of gorgeousness. She had successfully clashed colours, patterns, prints and textures with true “Creative” panache. A masterpiece!

Her shoes were from Hobbs. She teamed a Emerald Green (Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2013) Phase 8 skirt with a silk bird print orange Mary Portas blouse, a plum coloured vintage velvet blazer, accessorised with a beautiful handmade feather brooch. My contribution was a bright orange faux fur stole that we casually threw over one shoulder. Perfect.

The shoot was on location in Manchester and the girls really worked it in sub zero temperatures surrounded by snow. Having celebrity photographer Mark Waugh was brilliant. It was a great success and I can’t wait to see the results! The day was rounded off in style with cocktails at the Lowry Hotel. Nice.
